Criteria: The Westminster Society Awards are bestowed biennially for outstanding architecture
of social, civic and / or aesthetic importance; for exceptional restorations that enhance historic
qualities and attract further public appreciation; for significant contributions to urban vitality
and congeniality; and for imaginative creations that make urban life and work more amenable.
Exceptionally, we make awards for work outside the boundaries of the old Metropolitan
Borough of Westminster when the recipient has broad influence and / or wider urban
The regular categories are Architecture, Renovated Architecture, and Urban Design.
Biennial awards will next be bestowed in 2017.
The original church of St Martin's-in-the-Fields was replaced with a new building, completed in 1726. The design was criticised widely at the time but subsequently became extremely famous, being copied particularly widely in the United States.
